Education for European Jewish Leadership
Paideia - The European Institute for Jewish Studies in Sweden - is a nondenominational academic framework established in 2000 with a foundational grant from the Swedish government. Within an interdisciplinary academic setting, Paideia educates leaders for Europe - academicians, artists and community activists - towards fluency in Jewish sources. In renewing interpretation of Jewish text, Paideia is reviving a European Jewish voice long silenced by Communism and post-Holocaust trauma - a voice that can contribute to a culturally rich and pluralistic Europe.

Literacy in Jewish Text
At the heart of Paideia is the One Year Program, dedicated to the study and interdisciplinary interpretation of the textual sources that have served as the wellsprings of Jewish civilization. The program offers a combination of traditional textual study methodology (hevruta), an academic approach to interpretation, and an applied dimension, making it a unique European leadership program.

Literacy in the sources is enhanced through cooperation with The Shalom Hartman Institute of Advanced Jewish Research in Jerusalem. In addition to the year-long courses taught by the Paideia faculty, visiting scholars teach intensive courses, including "The Value of Life in Western and Jewish Philosophy", "Models of Leadership Mirrored in the Sources" and "Slavery to Redemption: Studies in the Book of Exodus". In order to facilitate study of texts, Hebrew is taught on three levels.

Specialization
Applicants are encouraged to bring their field of competence to studies at Paideia and to integrate it with textual sources. The One Year Program is thus divided into four tracks.

o The General track is ideal for candidates who want to combine a thorough course in Judaism focusing on textual sources with an applied dimension chosen from academia, art, or Jewish professional fields.

o The Academic track is suited for candidates with a degree who are aiming towards, or are already engaged in, a research career. Specific research fields are integrated with textual study in a paper.

o The Jewish professional track is designed for candidates who work with Jewish life, professionally or semiprofessionally. Jewish professional work is enriched with textual studies through tailor-made internships.

o The Arts track is for candidates who are active in various artistic disciplines and want to nourish their work with an enhanced knowledge of Jewish sources, studied in conjunction with arts, literature, film, theatre, and music. Artists follow all steps of the creative process and produce, exhibit and perform their works.

The One Year Program is an intense study experience. Classes take place daily between 9.oo and 17.oo, and sometimes in evenings and on weekends. The language of instruction is English. Depending on the track, students are required to develop an individual or group project within academia, the arts, or a Jewish professional field.

In Honour of Emmanuel Levinas
For 2006–2007, the program will be in tribute to Emmanuel Levinas (1906 - 1995), a Jewish philosopher and Talmudic scholar from Kaunas in Lithuania, who moved to France, where he wrote most of his works. Levinas was deeply influenced by Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger as well as by Jewish religion.

To Apply
Paideia invites applications from qualified individuals regardless of age. Communities throughout Europe may propose candidates whom they envision filling leadership roles. Students will be candidates for grants meant to free them from work while participating in the program. No prior study experience in Jewish text is required. Transfer credits for undergraduate courses may be available at the completion of the year depending on the home university. A limited number of scholarships are available, but you increase your chances of being accepted to the program if financing your year at Paideia through external funding.
