Rachel Livneh-FreudenthalDr. Rachel Livneh-Freudenthal is a lecturer of Jewish History and Jewish Thought.
Her fields of research are: the emergence of the Science of Judaism, Modern Jewish Thought, Judaism as culture, Jewish Hermeneutics. She has taught at the Freie Universität Berlin, at the Open University, Israel, and at Alma College in Tel-Aviv. She is currently an academic adviser in the Leo Baeck Institute for the Study of the History and Culture of the German-speaking Jewry.
Course DescriptionThe encounter between Judaism and Modernity provoked a reexamination of old questions, which concerned the essence of Judaism and its place in history and the pattern of Jewish life in a changing world: The need to redefine judaism was enhanced by tensions that characterized the newly emerging space between Nationalism and Religion, between Faith and History, and between life in exile and the idea of Redemption. The course will deal with several Jewish-European thinkers who were central in the formulation of the new questions, and who pointed ways to possible new directions and options of Jewish life and integrity. Thus they presented the past from the perspective of the future.
Every year Paideia offers a series of OPEN COURSES to the public. To participate in one or all of the OPEN COURSES there is an annual fee of 1300 Swedish crowns. Contact Paideia for more information.
