Welcome to a Paideia Conference on September 25-26, 2016, in Bajit, Stockholm!
In 2016, Paideia – The European Institute for Jewish Studies in Sweden – commemorates a number of milestones: the installment of the new Director Professor Fania Oz-Salzberger, the completion of the 15th class of Fellows, the inauguration of the 16th cohort in the presence of the ambassadors, the opening of Paideia folkhögskola – the first Jewish Cultural College in Scandinavia – and moving into Bajit, the new centre of Jewish education and culture in Stockholm. These occasions will be celebrated with an international conference on the theme “Bajit – Home: A Simple Notion Contested”.
The conference addresses and challenges the notion of “home”, understood intuitively as a natural human aspiration, yet an existentially elusive and a politically complex phenomenon. Drawing on Jewish sources and thought, we wish to initiate a conversation around the notion of “home” and its role today in Sweden and Europe. Academicians, thinkers, politicians, educators and young activists are all invited to join and engage in a cross-disciplinary dialogue on this topic.
Among the speakers are Moshe Halbertal, Fania Oz-Salzberger, Konstanty Gebert, Abdulkader Habib, Göran Rosenberg and Barbara Lerner Spectre. Textual studies are provided by Marc Hirshman, Ute Steyer and Eiran Davies.

The conference is organized in cooperation with Sweden’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Uppsala University, the Jewish Chronicle, Kista Folkhögskola, and the Jewish Community of Stockholm.
